Combi Boilers

(See the section on ‘Boilers’, on page 82.) Combi boilers provide hot water direct, rather than from a storage tank (HWC). You may remember the old gas hot water geysers that used to hang on (or more commonly off) the wall above the kitchen sink? Put such things out of your mind – the principle may be similar but the technology has, thankfully, moved on apace. Combi boilers heat water on demand as it flows through the boiler, their firing being activated by the flow of water, for example, in response to a tap being opened. Consequently, a combi boiler will not provide large volumes of hot water in a short space of time – such as might be required for multiple baths or showers (or other hot water appliances) being run simultaneously. However, standing losses are virtually eliminated because of the absence of a storage tank and associated pipework, resulting in high efficiency. Combi boilers, therefore, are generally most suited to smaller dwellings, such as one-or two-bedroom flats or small bungalows, rather than larger family houses.

Note that combi boilers are not readily integrated with solar water heating systems (see below), which require a hot water storage tank, unless dedicated solar storage is provided and linked into the combi boiler water feed.
